On Monday, July 6, 2026, members of the United States Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested a 36-year-old male wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Jersey City on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Raheem Rhett, of Jersey City, is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1)/(2), three counts of Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1a(1)/2C:11-3a(1), Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(1), two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (firearm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), Possession of a Weapon (firearm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1), and Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon (firearm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-7a. He was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is being detained at the Wake County Detention Center pending extradition to New Jersey.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2026, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired on Orient Avenue near MLK Jr. Drive. Responding officers located an injured male – later identified as Jenaro Tejada, 38, of Jersey City – with apparent gunshot wound(s). He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. During the response, a second victim, a 45-year-old male from Jersey City, was located on Jackson Square with an apparent gunshot wound.
Prosecutor Mello credited the Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit, the United States Marshals Service New York/New Jersey and Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Forces, and the Raleigh Police Department with the arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
