The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Shortly after 8 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of an injured male inside an apartment at 200 Cornelison Avenue. Responding officers located an unresponsive male – later identified as Omar Smith, 38, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound(s). He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Cause and Manner of Death are pending with the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
This matter is actively being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department. A person of interest has been identified.
