From March – May, 2020 the parking lots at the “Exchange,” an apartment complex located on Riverside Station Boulevard, were the scene of numerous burglaries into unlocked vehicles and the area where two motor vehicles were stolen.

On May 23, 2020, members of the Secaucus Police Department’s newly created, “Anti-Crime Unit” were conducting surveillance in these parking lots in response to the string of burglaries and thefts. While conducting surveillance they observed Ahmed Abid attempt to enter several parked vehicles. He was subsequently placed under arrest for Criminal Attempt to Commit Burglary [2C:5-1/2C:18-2a(1)].

Evidence obtained at the time of Ahmed Abid’s arrest and the investigation of 13 other car burglaries linked him to those crimes. Additionally, Ahmed Abid was identified as the person who stole a 2012 Honda Civic on March 31,2020 and a 2019 Acura RDX on or about May 16, 2020.

“This arrest would not of have been possible without the cooperative effort between the Building Management at the “Exchange” and the Secaucus Police Department,” Chief Dennis Miller said. “I am extremely proud of the work of the Anti-Crime Unit and Detective Division and fully support their efforts.” “However, the police can not do it alone and remind all residents to LOCK YOUR DOORS, to prevent this crime of opportunity,” Miller said.

Ahmed Abid, 25, of Edison was charged with 13 counts of Burglary [2C:18-2a(1)], 10 counts of Theft [2C:20-3a] and Criminal Attempt to Commit Burglary [2C:5-1/2C:18-2a(1)]. He was taken to the Hudson County Jail. These charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
