Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge
Patrick Murray announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department,
Kristian Gonzalez, a 28-year-old male from Paterson, has been charged in connection to the April
29, 2026, non-fatal shooting which occurred in the area of Oak Street and Summer Street in
Paterson. Kristian Gonzalez is charged with the crimes of Attempted Murder, first degree;
Aggravated Assault, second degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, second degree; Possession
of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, second degree; Possession of a Controlled Dangerous
Substance, one count in the third degree and one count in the fourth degree; and Possession of a
Controlled Dangerous Substance with the Intent to Distribute, two counts in the third degree.
On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at approximately 8:17 p.m., members of the City of Paterson
Police Department were dispatched to the area of Oak Street and Summer Street on a reported
shooting. Police were able to locate a potential crime scene in the area.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Gonzalez was responsible for the shooting. On
April 29, 2026, at approximately 9:11 p.m., Mr. Gonzalez was arrested, without incident, by the
Paterson Police Department in the area of North 8th Street, Hawthorne, New Jersey.
The sentencing exposure on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State
Prison with 85% of that term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release
Act, five years parole supervision thereafter; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months to be served before parole eligibility; on
Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State
Prison with 42 months to be served before parole eligibility; on third degree Possession of a
Controlled Dangerous Substance it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison; on third degree
Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance with the Intent to Distribute it is 3-5 years New
Jersey State Prison; and on fourth degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance it is
12-18 months New Jersey State Prison.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office will file a motion for pre-trial detention which will be
heard by a Superior Court Judge at a date and time to be determined by the Court. Criminal
complaints are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven
guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This investigation remains active and ongoing. More information will be released when it becomes
available.
