PARENT WORKSHOP Graphic Novels, Comics and Manga: Why They Matter, How to Read Them and What to Look For

This workshop is intended for comics-curious readers, parents and other grown-ups. Erik Jacobson, a literacy professor and lifelong reader of comics, will lead non-comics readers in a discussion of the format. The workshop will start with a review of the ways that comics support reading and writing development more generally, and then move onto what makes comics special. What can comics do that other texts can't? How does one make sense of pages that often have unconventional combinations of images and words? The session will close with suggestions for notable graphic novels, comics and manga and an invitation to check out the library's collections.

Registration required.
