Jeff Buckley, a rising star with an otherworldly voice, left the 90s music world reeling when he died suddenly after the release of his debut album. Told through never-before-seen footage and intimate accounts from the three women who knew him best, the film illuminates one of modern music’s most influential and enigmatic figures.Amy Berg paints an elegant and compassionate portrait of the late Jeff Buckley, whose one-in-a-generation voice and boundary-pushing artistry are spotlit for both existing fans and newcomers to his catalog. Beautiful scores and resonant, rare live performances underscore Buckley’s fullness of character — a history of the love and loss that shaped him, and thus the international music culture of the late 20th century. Discordant as Buckley’s end is, Berg makes space for the consonances in between, imbuing the film with special archival material and the permeation of Buckley’s own diaristic narration.
This film is a hum that echoes, and like Buckley’s “Hallelujah,” it takes on a light and life of its own.—Cameron Asharian
After the screening, film director Amy Bergwill be interviewed by WFMU's Irwin Chusid, who was friends with Jeff in the early 1990s. Also participating in the discussion will be Irene Trudel, veteran WFMU DJ and live music sound mixer for New York Public Radio, who engineered many of Buckley's WFMU sessions for Nick Hill's Music Faucet.
