On Thursday, April 17, 2025, members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and Hudson County Regional S.W.A.T. arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run that occurred in Jersey City on Monday, April 7, 2025.
Hassan Degregoda, of Jersey City is charged with Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(1), a crime of the second degree; Leaving the Scene of the Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.1, a crime of the third degree; Endangering an Injured Victim in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1.2a, a crime of the third degree; Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (motor vehicle) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(2), a crime of the third degree; Assault by Auto in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1c(1), a crime of the fourth degree; Obstruction in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:29-1a, a crime of the fourth degree; Causing Serious Bodily Injury While Driving with a Suspended License in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:40-22b, a crime of the fourth degree ; Possession of a Weapon (handgun) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1), a crime of the second degree; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), a crime of the second degree; Possession of a Prohibited Device (large capacity magazine) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3j, a crime of the fourth degree; and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4), a crime of the fourth degree. He was arrested at his residence on Morgan Street and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2025, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck in the area of Bay and Erie streets. Responding officers located a male victim, later identified as a 37-year-old Jersey City resident, with serious injuries. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene.
During the preliminary investigation, the vehicle suspected of being involved in the collision, a Mercedes S530, was located. A high capacity magazine was recovered during a court-authorized search of the vehicle. It was determined Degregoda and the victim were involved in an altercation prior to the collision. Witnesses reported Degregoda was armed with a handgun during the altercation.
Prosecutor Suarez credited the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, Hudson County Regional S.W.A.T., and the Jersey City Police Department with the investigation and arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
