Hello. This is Mayor Mark Zinna with a Friday news update.

Spectacular news this week, Edan Alexander was released and has been reunited with his family. We are all looking forward to Edan’s return to Tenafly and applaud the strength and fortitude of Edan’s parents and siblings. This is a tremendous development and the hearts and positive wishes of the Tenafly community are with Edan and his family.

Enjoy a weekend full of wonder at the Nature Center! This Saturday, May 17, start your morning with Nature Story Time from 10:00 am to 10:30 am, perfect for families with children ages 3 to 7, featuring a nature-themed book and a visit from one of our amazing Animal Ambassadors. Then, adults are invited to join a Wild Edibles Chat from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, a fascinating walk and talk all about foraging, medicinal plants, and mushrooms. Designed especially for seniors in partnership with the Senior Center.

The magic continues on Sunday, May 18 with Fabricating for Faeries from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm, a whimsical outdoor program for families and nature lovers of all ages. Build your own fairy house using natural materials after exploring the enchanting Fairy Trail! Space is limited, register today at tenaflynaturecenter.org to save your spot for these magical moments!

Get ready to earn your stripes at our First Annual Softball Day this Saturday, May 17 at the High School Softball field. Join in for an action-packed day starting at 10:00 am with high school softball, then at 11:00 am sharpen your skills at our softball clinic led by the High School team. At 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm cheer on our recreation softball teams before witnessing history at 5:00 pm with our very first alumni game! Snacks will be available for purchase. Let’s come together to celebrate the love of the game and make unforgettable memories! Bring your friends and family—it’s going to be a blast!

This Saturday, May 17 is paper shredding day at the Recycling Center. Shredding will take place between the hours of 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Household document shredding only, this is not for businesses. Arrive early, we shred until the truck is full.

Ben and Zach Kushman (Jersey Boyz Donate) in partnership with Coby Cohen of the Global Humanitarian and Social Activism clubs at the High School are holding a “Year of the Pencil” drive through the nonprofit Develop Africa to raise awareness about the educational resource gap in Africa. Over 39K pencils and supplies have already been collected from other initiatives around the globe. Let’s show them that Tenafly can move the needle further towards the 100K pencil goal! Please help to reach the goal providing pencils to students in under-served communities in Sierra Leone by donating new pencils and pencil sharpeners. Collection bins are located at all of our schools May 12 through May 31 as well as at 61 Elm Street and 17 Park Street.

Come and hear the Tenafly Community Choir and Orchestra in a celebration of music. Repertoire includes Handel's Zadok the Priest (sung at every British coronation since 1727), Schubert's Mass in G and Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. Sunday, June 1 at 7:00 pm at the Presbyterian Church, 55 Magnolia Avenue. All are invited to attend. Free entry, donations welcome.
