Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 57-year-old KAREN A. McEVOY of Teaneck, NJ on charges of theft by deception, impersonation, and forgery. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Teaneck Police Department, under the direction of Chief Andrew McGurr.
In February 2025, the Teaneck Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit regarding an alleged theft of funds at a non-profit organization located in Bergen County. An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Teaneck Police Department revealed that a volunteer of the organization, KAREN A. McEVOY, committed theft by deception by writing unauthorized checks from the organization’s bank account that she then deposited into her personal bank account. Specifically, detectives determined that McEVOY assumed the identity of another member of the organization and forged signatures on the checks in order to authorize the fraudulent transactions. The amounts fraudulently obtained by McEVOY totaled approximately $36,000.
As a result of the investigation, KAREN A. McEVOY was arrested on Friday, May 30, 2025, and charged with third-degree theft by deception, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4; third-degree forgery, N.J.S.A. 2C:21-1a(2); and third-degree impersonation, N.J.S.A. 2C:21-17. McEVOY was released pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella thanks the Teaneck Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
