East Hanover Police Officer Sentenced for Fatal Car Crash

Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll, Chief of Detectives Robert McNally, and Riverdale Police Chief Charles Quant announce that Keith M. Gunther, age 42, of Wanaque, New Jersey, has been sentenced in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on October 15, 2024.

On April 8, 2025, Gunther entered guilty pleas to second degree Reckless Vehicular Homicide, third degree Assault by Auto, and Driving Under the Influence before Judge Stephen Taylor.

On June 17, Judge Stephen Taylor sentenced Gunther to five years in New Jersey State Prison. The defendant will be required to serve 85% of the sentence before he is eligible for parole subject to the No Early Release Act.

The charges arise from a motor vehicle crash on October 15, 2024 on Route 23 North in Riverdale. At the time of the crash, Gunther was employed as a sergeant with the East Hanover Police Department. He was not on duty at the time of the crash and is no longer employed by the East Hanover Police Department.

Members of the Riverdale Police Department, Pequannock Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit participated in this investigation.
