Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrests of 19-year-old JEREMIAH L. RIVERA of Saddle River, NJ, and 20-year-old SHA’ZEIK DAVIS of Mahwah, NJ on charges stemming from a shooting that occurred in Saddle River, NJ. These arrests are the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Saddle River Police Department, under the direction of Chief Jason Cosgriff.
On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at approximately 6:16 p.m., the Saddle River Police Department, with mutual-aid assistance from surrounding towns and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, responded to shots fired outside a private residence on Chestnut Ridge Road in Saddle River with no injuries reported. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit was notified, responded to the scene, and initiated a joint investigation with the Saddle River Police Department.
Responding officers and detectives discovered ballistic evidence and were able to ascertain that the shooting was connected to an ongoing dispute between two groups of men. During the course of the joint investigation, it was determined that two vehicles, which were both occupied by several men, arrived at the residence on Chestnut Ridge Road and a verbal dispute ensued with a resident of the home. The resident, identified as JEREMIAH L. RIVERA, retrieved a handgun and fired one shot in the direction of the men who promptly drove away. The men ultimately returned to the residence, whereupon the dispute continued, and this time multiple shots were fired at the group of men. The investigation revealed that approximately nine gunshots were fired by RIVERA’s acquaintance, SHA’ZEIK DAVIS, who was present at the home and also possessed a handgun. One of the rounds fired by DAVIS struck one of the vehicles occupied by the group of men, but no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting. It was further revealed during the investigation that RIVERA provided false or misleading information to detectives.
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, as a result of the investigation, JEREMIAH L. RIVERA was arrested and charged with second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); second-degree providing false information to law enforcement, N.J.S.A. 2C:28-4a; third-degree aggravated assault by attempting to cause bodily harm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(2); and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4). RIVERA was remanded to the Bergen County Jail, made a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ, and was ordered released pending further court action.
On Thursday, July 17, 2025, as a result of the investigation, charges were filed against SHA’ZEIK DAVIS, including first-degree attempted murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1/11-3; second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b; second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); third-degree aggravated assault by attempting to cause bodily harm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(2); and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(4).
On Thursday, July 24, 2025, with the assistance of the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team and the Mahwah Police Department, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Saddle River Police Department located and arrested SHA’ZEIK DAVIS in Mahwah, NJ. DAVIS was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the Saddle River Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with this investigation.
