Driver Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident in Newark

Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda today announced the arrest in a fatal hit and run accident that killed one pedestrian and seriously injured another in Newark.

The accident happened around 9pm on Monday July 28 in front of the George Washington Carver Elementary School at 333 Clinton Place.

The driver, 33-year-old Segundo Carlos Bunay of Newark, was driving a 2014 white Ford Econoline Van when he hit the two women. He initially fled the scene but later returned.

Eryn Montgomery, age 28, was pronounced dead at University Hospital. Kieonna Jones, age 40, is reported to be in stable condition.

Bunay is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in a school zone, second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, second-degree assault by auto driving under the influence in a school zone, third-degree leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious driving injury, and two charges of third-degree endangering an injured victim.

These allegations are merely accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
