Aziz Combs
Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II announced today that a jury has convicted Aziz Combs, 34 of Irvington, of third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, fourth-degree resisting arrest, and fourth-degree obstruction of the investigation of a crime. The case was tried by Assistant Prosecutor Marco Collemi before the Honorable Judge Naazneen Khan.
On January 5, 2024, Newark police officers conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of South Orange Avenue and South 10th Street during which Combs exited the passenger side of the vehicle and fled on foot. After a brief chase, officers apprehended him despite his attempt to resist and obstruct arrest. The prosecution proved that Combs was in possession of cocaine. Further investigation determined that Combs is a persistent offender due to his extensive criminal record.
“The State would like to thank the jury for their service throughout this trial. This verdict shows that there are consequences for individuals who continue to engage in criminal behavior after being convicted in the past”, said Assistant Prosecutor Collemi.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office thanks the Newark Police Division for their assistance in this case.
Combs is scheduled for sentencing on September 12. He faces a possible prison term of three to 10 years because of his persistent offender status.
