The Attorney General’s Office today identified the man who was injured in a police-involved shooting that occurred on July 28, 2025, in Newark, New Jersey. The man who sustained a gunshot wound and survived has been identified as Shaquan Landrum, 34, of Hillside, New Jersey.
According to the preliminary investigation, members of the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force were in Newark assisting the Newark Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Team with executing an arrest warrant for attempted murder and other criminal charges stemming from a past incident in Hillside.
On the afternoon of July 28, law enforcement encountered the individual being sought on the warrant, Mr. Landrum, inside a home on Irvine Turner Boulevard in the area of West Bigelow Street in Newark. Mr. Landrum barricaded himself inside the residence. Mr. Landrum fired gunshots at various times over a 20-minute period, striking objects including a police vehicle behind which officers had taken cover. Officer Daniel Arias, of the Newark Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit, subsequently fired and Mr. Landrum was struck and wounded. He was transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment. During a search of the residence, law enforcement recovered a rifle and a handgun. No law enforcement officers were wounded.
Mr. Landrum has been charged by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office with attempted murder, attempt to cause serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon, possession of an assault firearm, possession of a privately made firearm without a serial number (commonly referred to as a ghost gun), endangering the welfare of a child, and other offenses. The criminal investigation into these charges is still ongoing and being conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The charges and allegations against Mr. Landrum are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating law enforcement’s use of deadly force pursuant to the Independent Prosecutor Directive. Both investigations are ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
