Sobriety Checkpoint in Paterson This Weekend

The Paterson Police Department will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint between Friday, September 5, 2025, and Sunday, September 7, 2025.

With large crowds expected in Paterson this weekend, the department is taking proactive steps to ensure that everyone can celebrate responsibly and safely. The checkpoint is part of an ongoing effort to deter impaired driving and enhance roadway safety.

“We want everyone coming into Paterson this weekend to enjoy themselves and celebrate safely,” said Officer in Charge Patrick Murray. “At the same time, we will not tolerate anyone who chooses to get behind the wheel while impaired. Our officers will be out in force to protect the community, and anyone who risks the safety of others will be held accountable.”

This operation will be conducted in accordance with the New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines and the legal standards established in State v. Kirk (App. Div. 1985), which require supervisory oversight, neutral vehicle selection, and public notice.

“This checkpoint is about saving lives. Paterson is a strong, resilient community, and our responsibility is to safeguard it,” said Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead, drive sober, and look out for one another.”

Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be briefly stopped and observed for signs of impairment. Drivers found to be under the influence will be subject to arrest and prosecution.

The Paterson Police Department reminds residents and visitors to always drive sober, use a designated driver, or arrange alternate transportation.
