Man Arrested for Firing Handgun During Argument in Phillipsburg

On Monday, September 15, 2025, at approximately 9:35 A.M., members of the Phillipsburg Police Department responded to the 100 block of Fox Street after receiving a report of a shot being fired within a residence. While enroute officers were provided a description of the individual. Upon the arrival of responding units, the individual was located exiting the residence. No injuries were reported on scene. The investigation revealed that after a verbal argument, McCaskill fired a weapon inside the residence. Further investigation revealed that the bullet shot by McCaskill traveled through an exterior wall into a neighboring residence where it was lodged in an interior wall. Unrelated to the verbal altercation, two individuals were present in the neighboring residence where the bullet entered and lodged.

A loaded Glock 9mm handgun and high capacity magazine were recovered from the scene. McCaskill was arrested for firearms related offenses, processed, and lodged in the Warren County Correctional Center.

McCaskill was charged on a Complaint Warrant with the offenses below.
  1. Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, specifically a handgun, without first obtaining a permit, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), a crime of the second degree;
  2. Certain person not to possess a weapon, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-7b(1), a crime of the second degree;
  3. Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution, specifically by providing false information to law enforcement, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:29-3a(7), a crime of the fourth degree;
  4. Possession of a large capacity magazine, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3J, a crime of the fourth degree.
  5. (2 counts) Criminal Mischief, specifically by firing the weapon and causing damage to both residences, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3a(1), a crime of the fourth degree.

Second degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of ten (10) years in the New Jersey State Prison and fourth degree crimes carry a maximum sentence of eighteen (18) months in the New Jersey State Prison

The charges are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The investigation was conducted by the Phillipsburg Police Department.
