Jersey City Teacher Convicted of Sex Crimes Involving Student

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a Hudson County jury convicted a Jersey City teacher of multiple sex crimes involving a juvenile student.

Apparao Sunkara, 72, of Hicksville, New York, was found guilty of Sexual Assault by Contact, a crime of the second degree, Endangering the Welfare of Child, a crime of the second degree, and Official Misconduct, a crime of the second degree. The verdict was delivered before the Honorable Nesle Rodriguez, J.S.C. following a multi-week trial.

On various dates between September 2019 and January 2020, Sunkara engaged in prohibited sexual acts with a 12-year-old female student while employed as a teacher at Infinity Institute in Jersey City.

Sentencing, which is subject to Megan’s Law registration and Parole Supervision for Life, is tentatively scheduled for Friday, December 12, 2025. The State was represented at trial by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Celia Morrison.
