Fort Lee Man Convicted In Brutal Stabbing

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the conviction of FREDDY PINA of Fort Lee, NJ in connection with a stabbing committed on August 5, 2023. After a two-week trial that began on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, before the Honorable Christopher R. Kazlau, J.S.C. in Bergen County Superior Court, the defendant was found guilty. Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, December 12, 2025.

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, in the early morning hours, FREDDY PINA approached the victim outside PINA’S home and stabbed him with a seven-inch knife, eviscerating him. One of the victim’s kidneys had to be partially removed as a result. The knife was recovered in FREDDY PINA’S home, and PINA turned himself in to police two hours after the attack.

On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, a jury convicted FREDDY PINA of second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of a weapon with the purpose to use unlawfully against another, and fourth-degree possession of a weapon. Second-degree offenses generally carry a sentence range of five to ten years in NJ state prison and a fine of up to $150,000. Third-degree offenses generally carry a sentence range of three to five years in NJ state prison and a fine of up to $15,000. Fourth-degree offenses carry a sentence of up to eighteen months in NJ state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

At trial, the State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Christine Gorzelany of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. She was assisted by Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Corinne Mason, Victim Advocate Susan Tanis, and litigation assistant Ryan Zimny.

Prosecutor Musella thanks the legal team for their zealous advocacy for the victim and his family, and for helping to combat crimes of violence in Bergen County. Prosecutor Musella also commends the members of the Fort Lee Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their skill and professionalism in investigating this matter.
