SUMMARY: The School Bus Aide assists the shuttle bus driver in providing safe, orderly, and
efficient transportation for students traveling to and from Secaucus Middle School and Secaucus
High School. The aide helps maintain proper student conduct on the bus, oversee safe loading
and unloading, assists students with special needs, and responds to student needs while the bus
is in motion.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Always monitor and ensure the well-being and safety of all passengers.
- Intervene as necessary to prevent disruptive, unsafe, or disrespectful behavior on the bus.
- Collaborate with the bus driver to maintain an orderly and respectful environment.
- Ensure that students remain seated and follow all safety rules while the bus is in motion.
- Assist with the safe loading and unloading of students at bus stops, school locations, and
shuttle points.
- Ensure the bus is always clean, including picking up trash, straightening seats, and
maintaining a neat and safe environment for students.
- Check that aisles, steps, and emergency exits remain clear of bags and other obstacles.

- Frequently standing and walking inside a moving bus.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and kneeling to assist students and secure equipment or
restraints.
- Ability to climb bus steps repeatedly and move safely in tight spaces.
- Sufficient vision and hearing to monitor students and respond to verbal cues and traffic conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: A Bus Aide works primarily on a moving school bus in a busy, childcentered environment, helping students board, exit, and remain safely seated while also
managing behavior and providing support as needed. The role involves frequent interaction
with children, exposure to all weather conditions during loading and unloading, and physical
tasks such as standing, bending, and occasionally assisting students with mobility needs. Bus
Aides must follow strict safety procedures and communicate effectively with the Bus Driver and
supervising staff.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Punctual, reliable, and able to maintain strong communication with supervisors, bus
drivers, and other staff at all times.
- Demonstrated patience, calm temperament, and ability to manage student behavior in
a firm but respectful manner.
- Prior experience working with school-age children and/or students with disabilities is
preferred but not required.
