Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 82-year-old DAVID M. STEWART of Hillsdale, NJ on charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Deputy Chief Jeff Angermeyer, and the Hillsdale Police Department, under the direction of Chief Travis Woods.
On Sunday, November 23, 2025, the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding alleged sexual assaults of a juvenile that had occurred in the past. An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hillsdale Police Department revealed that DAVID M. STEWART sexually assaulted and endangered a juvenile in Hillsdale, NJ, on more than one occasion, between April 2014 and April 2016.
As a result of the investigation, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, DAVID M. STEWART was arrested in Hillsdale, NJ and charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2B; and one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(1). STEWART was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the Hillsdale Police Department for its assistance in this investigation.
