Steven C. Berger
Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 65-year-old STEVEN C. BERGER of North Haledon, NJ, on charges of theft by deception. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jeff Angermeyer.
In November of 2024, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit received information about an alleged theft of funds by a former company controller of a Bergen County corporation, initiating a lengthy investigation. Ultimately, the investigation revealed that STEVEN C. BERGER engaged in a sustained course of conduct to misappropriate company funds in excess of $878,675.80. Detectives determined that BERGER executed a series of unauthorized salary increases and discretionary bonus payments to himself without corporate approval or lawful authority. A detailed examination of financial records established BERGER’s intentional misuse of a company-issued credit card for personal purchases unrelated to company operations. In this way, BERGER unlawfully diverted company funds to satisfy balances on a personal credit card account where he had incurred exclusively personal expenses.
As a result of the investigation, on Monday March 2, 2026, STEVEN C. BERGER was arrested in North Haledon, NJ and charged with two counts of second-degree theft by deception, N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4a. BERGER was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella thanks the North Haledon Police Department for its assistance.
