The Paterson Police Department has officially launched its 2026 recruitment campaign, inviting qualified candidates to apply for a career in law enforcement dedicated to service, professionalism, and meaningful community impact.
This year’s campaign – which uses the tagline “Your Community. Our Mission. Paterson Police.” – builds on last year’s initiative with a renewed push to expand the department’s applicant pool and attract individuals committed to making a difference in one of New Jersey’s largest and most dynamic cities.
Applications are now being accepted through March 31, 2026. The entry-level examination will be administered this summer.
The department is seeking motivated individuals from all backgrounds, including recent college graduates, military veterans, bilingual candidates, career changers, and Paterson residents who want to serve their own community.
A career with the Paterson Police Department offers competitive long-term earning potential and comprehensive benefits. Officers can earn over $100,000 after seven years of service, in addition to medical coverage, pension benefits, and other contractual protections.
“Paterson is a city where police work matters,” said Officer in Charge Patrick Murray. “Our officers are engaged every day in real, meaningful public safety work that directly impacts the lives of our residents. This is not a passive assignment, it is a career for individuals who want to serve with purpose, take on responsibility, and make a measurable difference in their community.”
While law enforcement agencies across the region compete for qualified applicants, Paterson offers something distinct: the opportunity to build experience, develop professionally, and serve a diverse population where dedication and skill are essential.
The department encourages individuals who are ready for a challenging and rewarding career to take the next step.
The Paterson Police Department’s Community Affairs Division will also support local applicants throughout the process. The Division will cover the application fee for up to 200 Paterson residents interested in pursuing a career with the department. In addition, the Division will host two informational open houses at the division’s substation located at 930 Main Street on March 14th and 21st. Prospective candidates can learn about the hiring process, ask questions, and receive guidance on preparing their application. The Division will also offer study sessions and physical preparation training ahead of the written examination and physical fitness test to help applicants successfully navigate each stage of the recruitment process.
