5/22 Update on Secaucus' Coronavirus Statistics

Posted Fri, May 22, 2020, By Staff Writer
Unfortunately, the rate of Coronavirus infections in Secaucus went back up slightly this past week. While this is obviously not a good sign, it is also not any indication that the virus is spreading rampantly again. There is simply not enough data to come to such a conclusion, but it is a good reminder that we are not out of the woods yet. The good news is that while the rate of infection did increase, it is still no where near as high as it was during the peak of the outbreak. As can be seen in the graph below, although the shape of the curve did tilt up a little compared to last week, it is still relatively flat compared to a month ago. Plus, there has been no new cases of Coronavirus related deaths in the last seven days, which is always a good sign.

Compared to the same day last week, the number of reported Coronavirus cases in Secaucus went up from 509 last week to 541 this week. This is an increase of 6.3%, and it is more than double the previous week's increase of 3.0%. But again, this is no reason to be alarmed. Fluctuations in data have to be expected, and no conclusions can be made unless a pattern repeats itself for two or three consecutive weeks. At the same time, though, this shows what a pivotal moment we are at. It is very possible for the situation to worsen again despite the fact that we are seemingly over the worst of this pandemic. That is why there is so much debate on how quickly businesses should reopen and when social gatherings should be permitted again. Hopefully, as more and more restrictions are lifted, there won't be signs that COVID-19 is spreading rapidly again.
