04/02 Update on Secaucus' Coronavirus Statistics

By Staff Writer, Posted 04-02-2021
Unfortunately, Secaucus' COVID-19 statistics took a turn for the worse over the past three weeks as more and more cases are being reported again. It is unclear whether this is a direct result of new variants of the virus or people becoming too lax with social distancing guidelines. But whatever the reason, there were sadly two new coronavirus-related deaths reported yet again. Hopefully, this latest uptick is only temporary, especially since Secaucus schools just announced plans for more in-person learning once students return to school after spring break. The latest coronavirus statistics can be seen in the graph below. (Click on any of the data points in the graph to see detailed statistics.)

Over the course of the past three weeks, the total number of COVID-19 cases grew from 2,511 cases to 2,780 cases. This averages out to 90 new cases per week. Comparing this number to the previous average of 54 new cases per week, this means that the infection rate is unfortunately on the rise again. More precisely, the infection rate has risen by 66.7% in the last three weeks. Not only is that a disappointingly high percentage, but it is also marks the first time that the infection rate has actually increased since February 4th.

With gradually more and more people getting vaccinated, one would expect the infection rate to continuously declined. However, this latest rise in new cases is not totally unexpected. That's because there has been a recent surge of new cases in New Jersey state-wide. In fact, New Jersey currently has one of the highest infection rates in the country along with the neighboring states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. If we are lucky, this will just be a short-term situation, and the infection rate in New Jersey will change course in the coming weeks as vaccination efforts continue.
